We have some special visitors that are joining our classrooms. We have inherited 2 class fish and we are so excited to have them join us. It was a quick move in and we will be sure to send home more information next week. If you have any immediate concerns please call or email us.
Today we were very chatty and we had to practice walking quietly from outside to our classroom a couple times. We also had difficulty settling down in class when the teachers asked everyone to be quiet. We know it can be so exciting to want to talk with our friends, but during class time is the time to be listening so that you will know what your task is. Please talk with your child regarding chatting when the teachers have asked them to stop.
We spent time catching up on our Phonics and doing our work for the first 6 sounds (S, A, T, I, P, & N) Ask your child what sound each one makes and then a word that starts with one of those sounds.
Please wear anything Orange that you may have!!!
Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters
Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis’s account of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the William's Lake Residential School and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening. September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and wellbeing, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. This date is significant because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Orange Shirt day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities across Canada to come together in the spirit of reconciliation.

Library Day!
Today, we got to go to the library and sign out one book! We all did a fantastic job picking a book quietly and using our library markers properly. If we bring our book back every week, on time, eventually we may be allowed to bring two books home. Library day will be every Tuesday or Wednesday.
We are still reviewing the letters S, A, T, P, I, N. Will you practice with me the sounds and actions for each letter? We also spent time blending a few of the letters together to make words. A few words we came up with are:
-as, ant, an, sat, sit, sap, tap, it, is, in, nit, nap, pin, pan, pat
Are there more words we can create using only these letters and their sounds??
This afternoon Mrs. G read us a book called What Does it Mean to be Kind? Some ideas we brainstormed were:
-helping others when they are hurt
-making people feel better when they are crying
-sharing
Then, Mrs. Nelson taught us a math game called Race to 100. And to end the day we had Grade 5 reading buddies again.

Today we reviewed the letters S A T and I. Then we learned the letter P. We learned their sounds and actions. Ask me what they are. Help to review these letters and sounds with your child.
We had a firedrill at 10am. It was much better than our first one. Mrs. Nelson's class was in the Music room and they had to go around the front of the school.
This afternoon we read stories about our emotions. Next week we will be starting activities that surround the movie Inside Out.
We talked about why Math is important and where we can find numbers in our world. We were then given a number and used objects to show that number.
To end the day we listened to a story called I Like Myself. Ask me 3 things I like about me!
Reminders:
-A Holiday sheet was sent home today. Please fill it out and return it as soon as possible.
-Please continue to send in Meet the Teacher forms
-Please discuss, sign and return Digital Citizenship forms. Students need these to go on the iPads and Computers

The past couple days have been busy with practicing routines of the school and classroom still. We are showing great improvement but still need to work on caring for others during recess time and care for place in our centers around the classroom.
We spent time reviewing letters s, a, & t. Each letter has a sound and a special action to go with the sound. Let me show you!! Today we even started blending the letters together to make words. We know how to sound out and spell three words. Ask me what they are and to show you!
To end the day today, we had buddies with the Grade 5's. It is nice to make friends in the older grades and have them read to us.
Reminders:
-return Bridge Club forms (only the students that took them home)

Fire Drill Practice
This morning we learned one sound to letter Aa after reviewing letter Ss sounds. Tomorrow we are going to start putting the letters together to make new sounds and even some words! Ask me what sounds Aa and Ss make.
This afternoon we read a story called Why Should I Listen? We brainstormed a few ideas first:
-to keep us safe
-to keep us out of trouble
-so we can do the right thing
As we learn more about the four Pillars of Care, we will continue to try our best to listen, share, and play safe at recess.
We also had our first fire drill practice this afternoon. It went okay. We are going to continue working on listening, being quick and quick when leaving and entering the school.
Reminders:
-Meet the teacher and BBQ Thursday 5:30-7:30
-Check backpacks for blue home folders, return folder and all forms everyday

Please talk with your child about the importance of Fire Drills and why we practice them. We will also have a discussion with our classes about this.
Today we participated in the Terry Fox Run! We watched a video about Terry and Mrs. Nelson cried! We learned that he is an important hero in Canadian History. If you still want to donate a Toonie for Terry we will accept those until Monday.
We will also accept any book orders on Monday.
Short and sweet today! Have a beautiful weekend!

Half Day Tomorrow!!
Tomorrow is a half day, we are done at 11:00am!
It is also our Terry Fox celebration day, you can still donate if you like.
This afternoon we talked about patterns in the real world. We found some in our classroom on some people's clothes, on the walls, and on the ceiling. Then, we went for a walk around the school to look for more real world patterns. Ask me what we found on our walk! A challenge for tonight is to look for more patterns at home, at the park, outside, etc.
To end the end the day we made our alphabet!! Below are a few photos of the work we did today.

Toonies for Terry!
On Friday, as a school, we will be remembering and celebrating Terry Fox by running altogether in the field outside from 10:00am-10:45am. Please ensure that your child has appropriate footwear to walk/run in and clothing for the weather. The school will also be fundraising for the remainder of the week, if you wish to donate, any amount will be accepted. Thank you in advance!
Our schedule changed a little bit today. We now have Phys. Ed first thing in the morning with Ms. Mesheau and then shortly after music with Ms. Laird. Mrs. G's class had music today, so tomorrow Mrs. Nelson's class will get to meet Ms. Laird!
Remember last week when we brought all those materials to school? Tomorrow we will be creating our Alphabet, with the materials we brought to school and sorted last week??

Today, we were assigned a letter and a type of material and drew out a plan of what we are going to create tomorrow!
This afternoon we started patterning! Everyone was given a handful of materials and got to create as many patterns as they wanted.

Tomorrow we will continue to explore patterns.
To end the day, we reviewed our four Pillars of Care and drew a picture of how we show two of them in our visual journals. Ask me what the four Pillars of Care are and what I drew!
Reminders:
-Book orders are due Friday
-Terry Fox donations being accepted all week
-Terry Fox run on Friday

Book Orders!
Welcome to the first Monday of the year!
Today we finished our journal writing about our summer. We only had to write one sentence as best as we could and draw a picture to go along with it.
After recess, the substitute teacher came in and sang songs with us.
In Phys. Ed we are still practicing following the rules of the whistles as we start to play new games.
This month we will be discussing and exploring our feelings based around the movie Inside Out. These feelings also connect to our school's four Pillars of Care: Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Place, and Care for Learning.
To end the day, Mrs. Nelson introduced phonics to us. We will be learning a new letter every couple of days. There will be a song and a little bit of work to do with each letter. Learning the sounds and names of all the letters of the alphabet will help us to learn to read and write. Ask me what letter we learned about today!
Reminder:
-Scholastic Book orders came home today. If you wish to order books, you can do so online or send in the order form filled out with a name on it with cash made out to Scholastic Canada. Those wanting to purchase books, we would like all orders in by Friday, September 16.

So many materials!!!!!
Thank You to everyone that brought in materials for our Creative Alphabet! We feel so blessed to have so many families who contributed to this project of ours. If you haven't sent your brown paper bag in yet, no worries, send it in tomorrow or Monday. We will most definitely use the items.
Today we practiced being quiet for 1 minute each time we entered the classroom. We are just so excited to talk with our friends that sometimes we forget to be quiet. We will continue to practice this each day. After lunch instead of just sitting quietly, we were able to quietly look through a book.
Room 4 went to Music this morning and are having a wonderful time learning there.
In PE we are learning to follow Mr. Sadowsky's whistle rules. 1 whistle means to sit where we are and 2 whistles means to run and sit down in front of him. We practiced while we played Everyone's it tag. When we got tagged we had to do 5 exercises (squats, push ups, jumping jacks, etc) and then we were able to go back and tag other students.
Ever wonder what's going to happen in Grade 1? Here is a link to a quick look at what your child will learn this year!

We have had a great start to our school year. We are learning the routines of the day and we are getting used to being at school all day long.
If you have the large envelope with all the forms filled out. Please send it back to school with your child and we will make sure the office receives those right away.
So far in Grade 1 we have discussed "How to be Caring..." Some ideas we came up with are: sharing, walking inside, not kicking or hitting, keep hands and feet to ourselves, if someone gets hurt, help them feel better, say sorry, help others, listen to others, try again, write nicely and neatly, sit quietly and we are still coming up with more!
We have also said "Good Bye Summer and Hello School"
Today we were also able to meet with our Grade 5 buddies. We will read with them each week. Sometimes we will go for a walk with them or do an activity together. We are so excited to be paired up with a Grade 5 student.
Today your child brought home a brown paper bag for our Materials Alphabet
Today in Grade 1 we decided to create the Alphabet with materials we have found. Your child helped come up with so many ideas. We are asking each child to bring in enough materials for their letter. Please fill this brown paper bag with any materials you may have, a mix is fine. These materials will not be returned and will be used with hot glue (nothing precious please).
Here are a few more ideas:
cheerios, pom-poms, bread tags, beads, pipe cleaners, beans, macaroni, marshmallows, pennies, twigs, pine cones, small rocks, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, broken crayons, pop can tabs, tissue paper, buttons, marbles, q-tips, lego, rubber bands, yarn, feathers, duo tang prongs, toothpicks, seashells, flowers, fabric, twist ties, popcorn, and any other great ideas you may have.
This is what we hope our Class Alphabets to look like.
