It's coming, it's coming!!!! Only 1 more day until Winter Break!!!! It has been a full and busy week. We are all ready for a little break! Having indoor recess and lunch time has not been too fun. We need our fresh air and playtime outside! We hope that the temperature warms up so that we can all get outside!!!

Tomorrow is our Pillars of Care Assembly at 8:15am! Some of you received an email letting you know if your child is receiving an award. Please look for that email. We would love to have you come to the assembly!

Tomorrow is early dismissal. Students are out at 11am!

Please make sure your child has returned their library book before the break!

Teachers were learning today!

Today we had a few different teachers in our classroom so our teachers could go learn from other teachers and other teachers could learn from our teachers! Mrs. Nelson taught a Science lesson on seasons and Ms. G taught a lesson in Math on graphing. We will continue to learn about these topics this week and in the new year.
There will be many opportunities for our teachers to observe other teachers and to have other teachers observe our classroom.

We are finished our phonic sounds and are beginning to work more specifically on words and other areas that we are individually in need of.

Today some students received sheets for home practice. These do not need to be returned to school. Just practice with them at home. If your child has not received one yet, don't worry, it will come soon. They are to help your child with one goal they are working on that was discussed at our last Parent Teacher Meeting.

If you have yet to meet with your child's teacher, please make an appointment as soon as possible by email them.

Michelle Nelson milnelson@cbe.ab.ca
Alyssa Grunert algrunert@cbe.ab.ca

We still had indoor recess and lunch today. The windchill keeps it too cold for us to go outside! We have all our fingers and toes and arms and legs crossed that tomorrow is warmer and we can get some much needed fresh air!

Quick Post

We had a whirlwind of a day! Please see the letter that came home with your child today. There was also a voice message delivered about our Fire/Evacuation to St. Bede School.

We are still trying to work hard this week and do some great learning. We know break is almost here and we can sometimes get very excited for that. Please remember to listen in class and do your work without too much chatting.

Carolling will be held in the Gym Tuesday 1:30-2pm and Thursday 9:30-10am. Please join us if you can.

We will also have a Pillars of Care Assembly on Friday morning. Please look for an email in the coming days to see if your child will be a recipient this month.

Important Homework!!!

Students received homework today. We need each child to complete the green sheet they received with a parent or guardian. For the phone number, please include the most important phone number for your child to memorize. They will also be working on memorizing their address. Please return the form by Wednesday, December 7th so that we can use it in our daily work.

We have our Christmas Concert on Wednesday!!!! Doors open at 6pm and students should be here by 6:15 for the concert to start at 6:30. Seating in the gym is First Come First Serve. Your child knows the way to their classroom, so you can let them go and find your seats in the gym.

We encourage you to stay for the whole concert as it causes the least disruption to the concert and you will be able to see what else is happening in the school. Your child will be supervised by their classroom teacher until the end of the concert. They will be ready for pick up at 7:30. Thank you!

This Week at School

Today was our last day with Mrs. Fillmore.. As happy as we are to have Mrs. Nelson back on Monday, we are sad to see Mrs. Fillmore go. She has been great! Helping us with our learning and coming up with some fun learning activities.

Literacy - We have learned a few new letters and letter blends this week, including Yy, oo, Xx, and ch. Be sure to ask me what the sounds and actions are for these letters! We are almost all done learning the letters and will be moving into more challenging work like reading, sight word reading and writing, and sentence writing.

Math - This week our focus has been numbers! We have done a few different including
-putting together number puzzles
-ordering numbers - forwards and backward
-determining what numbers come before and after a given number
-skip counting
-greater

Social Studies - We learned all about FEAR this week. We described fear as:
-scared
-loud
-quiet
-dark
-noises
Of course we drew a memory of a time we were scared and described what it looks and sounds like. Next week we will develop strategies for when we feel scared or fearful before moving on to the last emotion, disgust.

Science - We worked with colors in many different ways. We learned that the primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. To make secondary colors, you combine two primary colors together. The secondary colors are purple, green, orange. We got to to actually make and work with all these colors through the use of crayons, pencil crayons, pastels. Today, we learned that colors come from nature like plants. We got to use these natural material to create a rainbow!

On Wednesday we had library and reading buddies. Mrs. Nelson has also come in a few times to help out and visit before she comes back full time on Monday!

Last Couple Days

We have had some busy days and only a half day on Friday. That means we are done school at 11:00am. Please still send a snack!

New Letters - "ng" blend and "Vv" - ask me what the sounds and actions are! We have been using these actions to help us sound out new words in books and while we are writing. Will you help me practice all the letter sounds at home and build some words or sentences??

We wrapped up anger for the week. After reading a book about what anger is and how to make anger go away, we came up with our own lists. In a chart we used very descriptive words to explain what anger looks like and sounds like. Then we made a list of about 12 strategies, that we could use, at school or at home, to help the anger go away. Ask me which strategy I like to use!

In class, along with the anger, we are continuing our work around the school's four Pillars of Care: Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning, and Care for Place. Tomorrow morning we are having our second assembly. Four new kids from each class will be receiving a ribbon for consistently showing one or all of the pillars of care. Just because 4 kids are getting an award does not mean the rest of us are not trying or doing a good job as well.

Reminders:
-Tomorrow is a half day!
-Library books due back Monday. Please see pink notice from your child if no library book has come home in a while.
-Pillars of Care assembly tomorrow. If your child is one to receive an award, we would like to invite you to the assembly at 8:15am.

Full Moon Monday

We are having a hard time stopping talking during all parts of the day. There is a time and place to be silly and chat with a friend and that is at lunch and during recess. Sometimes, we have time to talk in class and we would really like to do all the group activities we have planned but really need everyones cooperation. Will you please talk to me about how important it is to listen and work quietly when at school?

New Letter - Zz - ask me what sound it makes and what the action is to go with it.

In math, we are still trying to work through our number puzzles. Tomorrow we are going to take a break from them and do something different.

Some of us learned about the emotion anger today. We watched a couple short videos from the movie Inside Out, brainstormed what anger is, and drew an angry memory on our emotion islands worksheet.
The rest of us completed a Care for Others writing.

Tomorrow, we will review and learn anger again and hopefully start some science.

Reminders:
-Library books are due back tomorrow please!
-No home reading tonight due to our day, see message above

Mrs. Nelson is Visiting!!!

I hope you are all having a wonderful Remembrance Day Long Weekend! This is Mrs. Nelson and I wanted you all to know that I will be visiting tomorrow morning (Monday).  It will be a short visit, but I'm so excited to see the kids.

This Week at School

There is no school tomorrow as it is Remembrance Day.

We have had an interesting week. We are still working hard on following the rules and expectations of the classroom and school. Talk with me at home too, with how I am doing and what I can do better to show the four Pillars of Care.

In Literacy, we learned a new letter blend "ee"  "or". Ask me what the action and sounds are. Help me review all the letters we know so far and create some words too!

All week, we worked on building a number puzzle. We had to write each number from 1-20, their matching word, and pictures with the correct amount.

Being that tomorrow is Remembrance Day, we had a school wide assembly to celebrate and honor our veterans. Throughout the week, we discussed this special day by reading books, watching videos, writing about peace, and building a poppy wreath with our Grade 5 buddies.

We wrapped up our discussions about sadness and on Monday we will start to explore anger.

Reminders:
-Library books due Monday
-No School tomorrow
-Picture Retake Day Monday!!

Enjoy your long weekend!

Nice Weather and Behavior

What a beautiful week we have had! Although it gets nicer throughout the day, we still need to be wearing the properly clothing.

Today, we had a few incidents of inappropriate behavior. We talked about it extensively and are doing some work in Social Studies around what to do when see or are apart of this kind of behavior. Please talk to me about how I can make good choices at school.

Yesterday, we had an unexpected practice fire drill. We still need to work on being quiet and listening to the teachers when walking out to the field.

New Letters - "oa" and "ie" - ask me what sounds they say and what the action is! Will you help me sound out and create words with these letter blends?

Yesterday we did another guided drawing and writing activity about snowy mountains. Today we did a "think outside the box" activity. We were given a small shape on a piece of paper and had to turn it into something amazing. Take a look at a few things people came up with!

To end the day we talked more about the emotion sadness. We made a list about what sadness looks like, sounds like, and what we can do if we are sad or if we see someone is sad.

Reminders:
-Veterans Food Drive is taking donations until November 15. If you would like to donate, they will take any non-perishable food item.
-Return library books to school Monday
-Home reading will come home again Monday

Wednesday, November 02, 2016

New Letter - Jj - ask me what the action and sound are for this letter!

In Math, we have been working with numbers. We brainstormed what they are, where we see and use them, and why they are important. A few things we came up with were:
-on clocks
-at the grocery store
-on vehicle license plates
-our age
The last two days we have been creating number animals. A number is written on a piece of paper and we use the shapes of the number and turn it into an animal. Ask me what my number was and what animal I turned it into!!

For writing practice today, we wrote three sentences about what sadness is to us. While writing, we have been practicing really hard to slowly sound out words we do not know how to spell and writing down the letters of the sounds we hear. This has been helping our writing a lot!

To end the day we had reading buddies with the Grade 5s.

Reminders:
-Book orders went home yesterday and are due back Tuesday the 8th.
-Home Reading came home today, please read the book, write it on the log, and return tomorrow to receive a new book.
-Library today. Please have it returned to school by Monday. If your child does not have a library book, look for a pink note in my home folder.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween to everyone who celebrates! If you are going out trick or treating or just handing out candy tonight, we hope you have fun and be safe. To avoid conflict at school and wanting to enjoy all of the candy you went out to get, please refrain from sending any Halloween treats to school for snack and lunch.

New Letter - today was a blend ai. Mrs. Fillmore taught us that in letter blends like this we always say the first letters name while the second letter is being lazy.

To celebrate Halloween, Mrs. G read us some books about bats. Then we did a guided drawing of bats. Mrs. G would draw one part of the bat, then we would. This continued until we all had a bat drawn in our journals. After that we wrote three sentences about bats:
Bats can see in the dark.
Bats fly at night.
Bats can find food.

We started to talk about the emotion sadness today from the movie Inside Out. Following a short clip from the movie, we brainstormed everything we could think of that sadness is. A few ideas we came up with were:
-lonely
-when you lose something
-when you miss out on something
-crying
-when you do not get what you want
To end the day, we drew a memory of a time we felt sad in our memory bank.

Although today was a productive day, we were very chatty. There were even times that our teachers would be trying to talk or teach us something important, and instead of listening, we were chatting, after recess and lunch too. Because of this, many of us did a writing on how we can show care at school. We are, though, getting a lot better at knowing and following the expectations at school.

Reminders:
-due to a busy end of day, home reading did not get home today, if you have, read a book at home. It will be coming home tomorrow!
-library books are due back to school tomorrow!!
-picture retake day in November 14

Goodbye Mrs. Nelson

Wednesday was Mrs. Nelson's last day with us. We were very sad to say goodbye but know we will see her again very soon! In the mean time, we welcome Mrs. Fillmore into our classroom.

---Ss, As, Tt, Ii, Pp, Nn, Cc, Kk, Ee, Hh, Rr, Mm, Dd, Gg, Oo, Uu, Ll, Ff, Bb---

We have continued our exploration around the emotion of joy this week too. We described what joy looks like and sounds like, and made a list of strategies we could use, at school, to make ourselves or someone else feel joyful. On Monday, we will start learning about sadness.

On Thursday, G.P Vanier Band came and gave us a spooky halloween performance. It was so cool!

How do you feel Joy?

Students brought home a Home Reading folder today. Ms. G's class has blue and Mrs. Nelson's class has red. Please read with your child each night and encourage them to find words in the book. Having a positive experience reading books will be the foundation block for great readers. Once your child is finished the book, please sign the form in the folder and return the book and folder to school. This should be occurring daily. Thank you so much!

This afternoon we continued our discussion about how we feel Joy. We wrote 2 sentences in our journals.

       Joyful is __________.

We had many great answers. It was lovely to see your children coming up with so many wonderful ways to show Joy! Keep up the great work.

Joyful is:
happy
music
my family
food
laughing

Our new letter today for phonics is Ll. We listened to a story for the sound that kept repeating itself and then we practiced the sounds with the actions and sang the song. Ask me what the action and sound is for this letter. The letters are listed below to practice at home too. Some activities we could do together are:
-practice the sound with the action
-practice printing the letters
-build words using only the letters we've done so far

---Ss, As, Tt, Ii, Pp, Nn, Cc, Kk, Ee, Hh, Rr, Mm, Dd, Gg, Oo, Uu, Ll---

Thank you to all students who returned their Library books today. Please help your child remember to return their book every Monday. Sometimes we forget and that's ok, please return it by Tuesday so we can ensure they are checked in and we are able to take out another book from the Library.

A student's mom brought in a healthy snack for us today. We were able to enjoy pineapple, cantelope, honey dew, grapes and watermelon. Mmmm so delicious!!!

Pillars of Care

First thing this morning we had our first Pillars of Care assembly. Thank you to all the parents who came out. There will one every month so if you did not get a chance to come this time, keep an eye on the calendar for the next one. The students recognized this month are:
Care for Self: Seren, Hannah
Care for Others: Kendra, London
Care for Place: Francis, Aiden
Care for Learning: Chance, Teagan

After the assembly the morning went by quick! We did calendar and practiced counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s to 100. Will you help me practice counting at home this weekend too??

We ended the day reviewing phonics. Thank you to those who are practicing at home. Starting Monday, Home Reading will be coming home. So practicing our letters will help us develop our reading skills too.

Reminders:
-Library books are to be returned to school Monday
-If your child have laced shoes does not know how to tie them, please teach them, or send them with different shoes. We don't mind helping them once and a while but to help all of them all day takes a lot of time. One of the staff members was also seriously hurt when a student with untied shoes walked passed and the staff member stepped on them

-love             -pets
-laughing     -playing
-singing        -fun
-smile

Leaves, leaves, leaves!

In Phys. Ed we started soccer skills. Today we practiced passing the ball nicely with two friends.

In Daily 5 we are continuing to work on Read to Someone. Today we made it almost 10 minutes!

New Letter: Gg - ask me what the sound and action are. Lets build some words too, using all the letters we know! We also have been practicing printing the letters.

---Ss, As, Tt, Ii, Pp, Nn, Cc, Kk, Ee, Hh, Rr, Mm, Dd, Gg---

This afternoon we explored leaves! We sang a song called October. Let me sing it for you, the tune is to John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt

Come Rake
A giant pile of leaves
In October when they fall
When leaves turn red and brown
With pumpkins all around
Then its October, in the fall
da da da da da da da

Then we went out side and found 2-4 leaves that were different. In our table groups we used our five senses to learn more about leaves and shared out discoveries.

Finally, we turned our leaves into art. Some of us traced the outside of the leaves and colored them in and some of us put the leaves under the paper and shaded on top. Take a look at what we have created so far.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Welcome back from your extra long weekend, we hope you enjoyed the snow and celebrating with loved ones.

On Thursday, we read a book called Thanksgiving Feast by Quinlan B. Lee. In the story we learned that Thanksgiving is about sharing with family and friends and being thankful for all you have. A few things we as a class are thankful for are:
-the world     -my family      -my pets     -my Grandma/Grandpa      -all the food

Today we continued working on Daily 5: Read to Self. On Thursday we learned that it is a time for you to read a book, all by yourself, quietly; reading the pictures, practicing sounding out words, or finding letters we know. Today we learned how to pick a good book. Ask me what makes a Good Fit Book!

Letter - Rr is what letter we learned today! Please review with me the sound and action. Will you also help me build some more or new words with all the letters we have learned?

Good Evening

We are in need of Child Proof Door Handles for our Classrooms. If you have this item that you could donate to our class please email me at milnelson@cbe.ab.ca

Today we learned a new phonics sound. This sound has 2 letters. Ask me what letters they are and what the sound is. Because there were 2 letters we got 2 songs! They were so fun!

This afternoon we started watching the movie Inside Out. We have done so much work around our feelings that this is a great way to remember what our feelings can do for us. We are continuing to learn how to deal with our many feelings and what is appropriate to do when helping ourselves calm down. Talk with your child regarding their feelings this evening.

Reminders:
- send in holiday forms
- return digital citizen forms asap
- return Meet the Teacher forms

We have some special visitors that are joining our classrooms. We have inherited 2 class fish and we are so excited to have them join us. It was a quick move in and we will be sure to send home more information next week. If you have any immediate concerns please call or email us.

Today we were very chatty and we had to practice walking quietly from outside to our classroom a couple times. We also had difficulty settling down in class when the teachers asked everyone to be quiet. We know it can be so exciting to want to talk with our friends, but during class time is the time to be listening so that you will know what your task is. Please talk with your child regarding chatting when the teachers have asked them to stop.

We spent time catching up on our Phonics and doing our work for the first 6 sounds (S, A, T, I, P, & N) Ask your child what sound each one makes and then a word that starts with one of those sounds.

Please wear anything Orange that you may have!!!
Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters

Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis’s account of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the William's Lake Residential School and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening.  September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and wellbeing, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. This date is significant because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Orange Shirt day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities across Canada to come together in the spirit of reconciliation.

Library Day!

Today, we got to go to the library and sign out one book! We all did a fantastic job picking a book quietly and using our library markers properly. If we bring our book back every week, on time, eventually we may be allowed to bring two books home. Library day will be every Tuesday or Wednesday.

We are still reviewing the letters S, A, T, P, I, N. Will you practice with me the sounds and actions for each letter? We also spent time blending a few of the letters together to make words. A few words we came up with are:
-as, ant, an, sat, sit, sap, tap, it, is, in, nit, nap, pin, pan, pat
Are there more words we can create using only these letters and their sounds??

This afternoon Mrs. G read us a book called What Does it Mean to be Kind? Some ideas we brainstormed were:
-helping others when they are hurt
-making people feel better when they are crying
-sharing

Then, Mrs. Nelson taught us a math game called Race to 100. And to end the day we had Grade 5 reading buddies again.

Reminders:
-send in holiday papers
-return digital citizen forms asap

Monday, September 26, 2016

Today we reviewed the letters S A T and I. Then we learned the letter P. We learned their sounds and actions. Ask me what they are. Help to review these letters and sounds with your child.

We had a firedrill at 10am. It was much better than our first one. Mrs. Nelson's class was in the Music room and they had to go around the front of the school.

This afternoon we read stories about our emotions. Next week we will be starting activities that surround the movie Inside Out.

We talked about why Math is important and where we can find numbers in our world. We were then given a number and used objects to show that number.

To end the day we listened to a story called I Like Myself. Ask me 3 things I like about me!

Reminders:
-A Holiday sheet was sent home today. Please fill it out and return it as soon as possible.
-Please continue to send in Meet the Teacher forms
-Please discuss, sign and return Digital Citizenship forms. Students need these to go on the iPads and Computers

Meet the Teacher Tomorrow!

Tomorrow evening, September 22 is Meet the Teacher night! If you have not selected your appointment time using you My CBE Account, please do so. The times you can select are 6:00pm, 6:40pm, or 7:20pm. The Grade 1 presentation will be in the Library/Learning Commons. All students went home with a yellow sheet titled "Meet the Teacher", please complete that and return it to school as soon as possible, ideally before Thursday's meetings.

The past couple days have been busy with practicing routines of the school and classroom still. We are showing great improvement but still need to work on caring for others during recess time and care for place in our centers around the classroom.

We spent time reviewing letters s, a, & t. Each letter has a sound and a special action to go with the sound. Let me show you!! Today we even started blending the letters together to make words. We know how to sound out and spell three words. Ask me what they are and to show you!

To end the day today, we had buddies with the Grade 5's. It is nice to make friends in the older grades and have them read to us.

Reminders:
-return Bridge Club forms (only the students that took them home)
-letter from Parent Council coming home today
-Meet the Teacher tomorrow evening, dinner served at 5:30, presentations start at 6:00

Fire Drill Practice

This morning we learned one sound to letter Aa after reviewing letter Ss sounds. Tomorrow we are going to start putting the letters together to make new sounds and even some words! Ask me what sounds Aa and Ss make.

This afternoon we read a story called Why Should I Listen? We brainstormed a few ideas first:
-to keep us safe
-to keep us out of trouble
-so we can do the right thing
As we learn more about the four Pillars of Care, we will continue to try our best to listen, share, and play safe at recess.

We also had our first fire drill practice this afternoon. It went okay. We are going to continue working on listening, being quick and quick when leaving and entering the school.

Reminders:
-Meet the teacher and BBQ Thursday 5:30-7:30
-Check backpacks for blue home folders, return folder and all forms everyday

Fire Drill on Monday

Please talk with your child about the importance of Fire Drills and why we practice them. We will also have a discussion with our classes about this.

Today we participated in the Terry Fox Run! We watched a video about Terry and Mrs. Nelson cried! We learned that he is an important hero in Canadian History. If you still want to donate a Toonie for Terry we will accept those until Monday.

We will also accept any book orders on Monday.

Short and sweet today! Have a beautiful weekend!

Half Day Tomorrow!!

Tomorrow is a half day, we are done at 11:00am!

It is also our Terry Fox celebration day, you can still donate if you like.

This afternoon we talked about patterns in the real world. We found some in our classroom on some people's clothes, on the walls, and on the ceiling. Then, we went for a walk around the school to look for more real world patterns. Ask me what we found on our walk! A challenge for tonight is to look for more patterns at home, at the park, outside, etc.

To end the end the day we made our alphabet!! Below are a few photos of the work we did today.

-Book orders are due tomorrow

Toonies for Terry!

On Friday, as a school, we will be remembering and celebrating Terry Fox by running altogether in the field outside from 10:00am-10:45am. Please ensure that your child has appropriate footwear to walk/run in and clothing for the weather. The school will also be fundraising for the remainder of the week, if you wish to donate, any amount will be accepted. Thank you in advance!

Our schedule changed a little bit today. We now have Phys. Ed first thing in the morning with Ms. Mesheau and then shortly after music with Ms. Laird. Mrs. G's class had music today, so tomorrow Mrs. Nelson's class will get to meet Ms. Laird!

Remember last week when we brought all those materials to school? Tomorrow we will be creating our Alphabet, with the materials we brought to school and sorted last week??

Today, we were assigned a letter and a type of material and drew out a plan of what we are going to create tomorrow!

This afternoon we started patterning! Everyone was given a handful of materials and got to create as many patterns as they wanted.

Tomorrow we will continue to explore patterns.

To end the day, we reviewed our four Pillars of Care and drew a picture of how we show two of them in our visual journals. Ask me what the four Pillars of Care are and what I drew!

Reminders:
-Book orders are due Friday
-Terry Fox donations being accepted all week
-Terry Fox run on Friday

Book Orders!

Welcome to the first Monday of the year!

Today we finished our journal writing about our summer. We only had to write one sentence as best as we could and draw a picture to go along with it.

After recess, the substitute teacher came in and sang songs with us.
In Phys. Ed we are still practicing following the rules of the whistles as we start to play new games.

This month we will be discussing and exploring our feelings based around the movie Inside Out. These feelings also connect to our school's four Pillars of Care: Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Place, and Care for Learning.

To end the day, Mrs. Nelson introduced phonics to us. We will be learning a new letter every couple of days. There will be a song and a little bit of work to do with each letter. Learning the sounds and names of all the letters of the alphabet will help us to learn to read and write. Ask me what letter we learned about today!

Reminder:
-Scholastic Book orders came home today. If you wish to order books, you can do so online or send in the order form filled out with a name on it with cash made out to Scholastic Canada. Those wanting to purchase books, we would like all orders in by Friday, September 16.

So many materials!!!!!

Thank You to everyone that brought in materials for our Creative Alphabet! We feel so blessed to have so many families who contributed to this project of ours. If you haven't sent your brown paper bag in yet, no worries, send it in tomorrow or Monday. We will most definitely use the items.

Today we practiced being quiet for 1 minute each time we entered the classroom.  We are just so excited to talk with our friends that sometimes we forget to be quiet. We will continue to practice this each day. After lunch instead of just sitting quietly, we were able to quietly look through a book.

Room 4 went to Music this morning and are having a wonderful time learning there.

In PE we are learning to follow Mr. Sadowsky's whistle rules. 1 whistle means to sit where we are and 2 whistles means to run and sit down in front of him. We practiced while we played Everyone's it tag. When we got tagged we had to do 5 exercises (squats, push ups, jumping jacks, etc) and then we were able to go back and tag other students.

Ever wonder what's going to happen in Grade 1? Here is a link to a quick look at what your child will learn this year!

We have had a great start to our school year. We are learning the routines of the day and we are getting used to being at school all day long.

If you have the large envelope with all the forms filled out. Please send it back to school with your child and we will make sure the office receives those right away.

So far in Grade 1 we have discussed "How to be Caring..." Some ideas we came up with are: sharing, walking inside, not kicking or hitting, keep hands and feet to ourselves, if someone gets hurt, help them feel better, say sorry, help others, listen to others, try again, write nicely and neatly, sit quietly and we are still coming up with more!

We have also said "Good Bye Summer and Hello School"

Today we were also able to meet with our Grade 5 buddies. We will read with them each week. Sometimes we will go for a walk with them or do an activity together. We are so excited to be paired up with a Grade 5 student.

Today your child brought home a brown paper bag for our Materials Alphabet

Today in Grade 1 we decided to create the Alphabet with materials we have found. Your child helped come up with so many ideas. We are asking each child to bring in enough materials for their letter. Please fill this brown paper bag with any materials you may have, a mix is fine. These materials will not be returned and will be used with hot glue (nothing precious please).

Here are a few more ideas:
cheerios, pom-poms, bread tags, beads, pipe cleaners, beans, macaroni, marshmallows, pennies, twigs, pine cones, small rocks, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, broken crayons, pop can tabs, tissue paper, buttons, marbles, q-tips, lego, rubber bands, yarn, feathers, duo tang prongs, toothpicks, seashells, flowers, fabric, twist ties, popcorn, and any other great ideas you may have.

This is what we hope our Class Alphabets to look like.

Happy Eid!
