Today was a Funny Day! We had a different schedule because both Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. G were being observed by other teachers and then they went to observe other teachers! The teachers still need to learn as well.

We had Science first thing this morning and discussed the importance of safety to our senses. We discussed what would happen if we didn't have one of our senses. Our HOMEWORK is to find out how does our sense of SMELL keep us safe!!!  We look forward to some great answers tomorrow!

After recess we got to design our own desk and chair for Grade 2. Mrs. G let us be as creative as we wanted to be. Some of us chose heart or star shaped desks. Some of us have taller desks so we can stand and some of us even have super short desks so we can sit on the ground. We designed our chairs also. We will continue to work on this project over the next few days.

This morning we had our Pillars of Care Assembly. Congratulations to all the students who received an award! Keep up the great Caring!

We had a quick snack and movement break and then we learned about Non-Standard Measurement for Math. We were able to use erasers, pencils, wooden sticks, clothespins or popsicle sticks to measure a variety of objects in the classroom.

Non- Standard Measurement means - units not typically used (so we wouldn't use a ruler or measuring tape at all)

Yesterday we talked about how to save the Great Barrier Reef and to Save the Bees as well. Here is a link to get free wildflowers seeds. Plant the wildflowers and lets help save the bees!

We hope you have a fantastic weekend! See you on Monday (psst, it's the last week of April!!! We can't believe this school year is just zipping by)

Popcorn sales start on Monday please! Sorry about that miscommunication! We got it worked out for today though.

*** Early Dismissal tomorrow! Pillars of Care assembly tomorrow! 8:15am ***

We looked at our seeds in their paper towels and most of them had grown a sprout! We then planted those seeds into soil. We spritzed them with some water and put them in sunlight....so now we just watch them grow!!!!

We also discussed about the largest living organism. It is the Great Barrier Reef! It is located in Northern Australia. It is 2300km long. That's just like driving from Vancouver, BC to Winnipeg, MB. WOAH!!!! We showed this to the kids on a map of Canada!

Then we used bright watercolour paint and painted a piece of watercolour paper. Then we sprinkled salt all over it. This helps it to look like a coral reef. We are making our own reef. We compared what the Great Barrier Reef looked like long ago and what it looks like now! Ask your child about the difference.

Then we watched a Magic School Bus video all about Reefs!!!

At the end of the day we went and cleaned up the schoolyard! We wore a disposable glove and picked up a lot of garbage! We want to take care of our earth! It's Earth Day on Saturday! Let's all take care of the earth together!

We didn't take a look at our flowers today! We will for sure look at them tomorrow. Instead, we did a Sound Experiment. We each took a plastic cup and we were given 1 elastic band. Some elastics were too big, some were thick and some were skinny. We discovered that if the elastic band is different, but the cup is the same, the sound they make are all different. We also discovered if we use the same elastic band but a different object the sound is different as well. We love learning about sound.

Tomorrow we will take a look at our flowers and seeds and hopefully do some planting if our seeds have sprouted.

This afternoon we had a practice lockdown. It happened while we were with our buddies reading together. Almost everyone did a fantastic job. Talk with your child about the importance of remaining quiet and still during lockdowns. We will review this information tomorrow morning.

This morning for Science, Ms. Chen taught us about flowers and we discussed that in order for a flower to get water it sucks it up through the stem.

We put different food colours in 3 jars and we made predictions about what it will look like tomorrow. We were to colour one of the jars of flowers to show our prediction. Some students thought the flowers would look green, or blue or red tomorrow. Depending on the colour of water. Some students however, thought the flower petals would be yellow, or brown or rainbow.
Can't wait to see what happens!!!

We discussed a couple times today about our Pillars of Care, specifically Care for Learning and Care for Others. We know how to show these two Pillars and we are continuing to work on them.  We will discuss the other two later this week.

Safeway!!!!

We had a great trip to Safeway! The walk was lovely, no rain, and the tour was awesome! We got to go behind the scenes of a lot of the departments. We even got to see the Meat Cutter cut some really big steaks!

We brought home a banana, juice box, fruit leather and a cookie. (most kids ate or drank these along the way). We tried a piece of turkey or ham from the deli department, we had a vanilla bean or ice tea drink from Starbucks (no caffeine in anything) and the next time you take your child into Safeway you can ask for a Helium balloon because they did a tour with Kim. There is a helium shortage in Calgary right now so their delivery didn't come. Hospitals need the helium more than balloons do.

No home folders or home reading came home tonight...we barely made it back on time to end the day!

We learned a bit about plants today and we made a prediction about what we think is inside our lima beans. We are soaking a few in water tonight and we will see what they look like tomorrow. Next week we will probably plant something!

Volunteer

An email was sent home today about needing Volunteers for our Field Trip tomorrow. Having Volunteers with a Security Clearance who have submitted all their forms to the school office is very important for us and provides many opportunities for your children to attend off site field trips. Having volunteers in the classroom is also very helpful. If you are able to Volunteer and have your Security clearance and all forms handed in to the School office, please let us know.

Having Volunteers for our classroom provides the students with other field trip opportunities as well. We hope to have an in-class Field Trip in May and go to the Zoo in June but we will have to make sure we have enough Volunteers before we can go ahead with those two opportunities. We also love to have Volunteers in our class to help out with a variety of things. If you would like to get the Volunteer forms started, please contact our school office.

We had one of Mrs. Nelson's friends who has their Security Clearance say that she could help us out for our Field Trip, which was so nice! But then, we had another two Volunteers let us know they could help out! Yea!!! The field trip is on!!!!

Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather tomorrow.

Field Trip forms are DUE!!!!! We still have about 10-15 students, between both classes, who have not returned the bright yellow field trip form. Our field trip is this Wednesday April 12th (in 2 days). We are taking a walk through the Community to Safeway and having a discussion about Healthy Living.

If you would like to Volunteer please make sure your School Security Clearance and forms have all been approved with the office before you say that you can volunteer. Thanks :)

Today we had our 2nd Art Day with Mrs. Stables! We finished up most of our project! We will have to do a little bit of work on them before they are finished but right now they look GREAT!!! We can't wait to show them to you on the evening of April 27th.

You will get to see our wonderful art on April 27th. It will be displayed at school during our Math and Art Showcase Evening!

If your child has any serious food allergies that we are unaware of, please notify the school immediately!

Lots of Info!!!!

We sent home a bunch of information today and yesterday! Please make sure you read through it all and send back the field trip form and let us know if you can volunteer!

We had our Student Teacher from the University of Calgary start with us this week. Her name is Ms. Chen. She will be with us until the end of April.

A few of us are still missing Library books from before Spring Break. Please look for the notice that should have come home today and take a look for the book! :)

We start our Art Residency tomorrow with Mrs. Jennifer Stables. We have been busy collecting materials. It's not too late! You can bring materials in too. If you have fresh flowers we will be able to dehydrate them in time for our second Art day on Monday.

Items we could use more of:
flowers (dry or fresh)
small shells
wheat
sage
leaves (all colours: green, yellow, red, orange, but we do NOT need any more brown. We collected a bunch of those today!)

Thank you so much for helping us with this great Art Project. We can't wait to share it with you.
