Today we continued our Math and Literacy Centres in class.
In PE we started Mission Impossible! Tomorrow will be the first day that we will get to spend a long amount of time trying to get through the tough course. Today we just explored different parts of it. One important thing for Mission Impossible is that we stay silent as we are moving through the course. We don't want to touch any objects or say anything or else we will lose points.
Thank you to everyone who came prepared for Mission Impossible with having their hair tied back, no hoodies and proper clothing. It is a great help to get started!
Thank you to all the students who brought in their Library book. Please bring it tomorrow if you forgot today! If you have received a Overdue Library Notice please look at home for the book. If you have any questions or concerns regarding Library please write us a note or send us an email.
This afternoon we talked about different 2D shapes. Ask your child about 3 shapes we discussed!!!!
Reminders:
January 27th - Report Cards come home
January 30th - Swimming Forms and Money due
February 8-15 - Swimming

There's homework tonight!
Students are to complete the My Neighbourhood worksheet. This afternoon we talked about our community and we want to know what each student likes about their neighbourhood.
Thank you to everyone who has already sent in their swimming forms! We are still looking for a MALE VOLUNTEER!!!! If you are able to fulfill this role for us during our swimming times, we would be so appreciative.
If your child has not returned their Blue Home Folder or Home Reading Folder to school for quite some time, please help them put it in their backpack so that we can update their home reading books. It is very important that students are reading daily.

Swimming!!!!!
In the middle of February, we will be going swimming as part of our Physical Education program. We will swim for a total of 6 days. On swimming days we ask that students bring a swimsuit, towel and plastic bag for wet items.
We are also in need of a MALE volunteer to help out in the boys changeroom.
-We would need you to be at the pool from (9:30-10:10am) If you are only able to do a couple of those days please still let us know.
-You will need to be able to volunteer with the CBE (security check and volunteer forms filled out) if you do not have this already done, I don't believe there will be enough time to get it done before we go swimming.
Thanks in advance!!!
Today we learned about "My Town". Ask your child what city they live in. In Grade 1 Social Studies, we focus on Our Community. We will continue to learn about My City and what we can find here in Calgary.
Scholastic Orders are due ASAP! Please send those in with your child!
If anyone would like to volunteer in the classroom on a regular basis, please email us. Once a month, once a week or more. We would love to have you join us.

Gymnastics!!!!
We started Gymnastics today in PE. We stretched our muscles and played a few balancing games. Thank you to everyone that wore appropriate clothing. We love that you can all participate.
Students need to be able to take off their socks and shoes participate. So please help your child when dressing in the morning make appropriate choices (eg: girls should not be wearing tights.)
In class we were introduced to a few Math Centres! These were really cool. We were able to explore them with our friends.
We are bringing home a new Library Book. If your child did not bring home a new book, please search your home, car and family's homes for it. We have checked the library for all overdue books and they do not appear to be in the Library at this time.
After a quick round of Literacy Centres this afternoon, we also had reading buddies! We love meeting with our buddies!
Students were able to go outside for Lunch Recess! It was still pretty cold, so please make sure your child is a snuggled up in warm gear. If you need help finding toques, mitts or snowpants please let us know.
Have a great Wednesday Evening!

Note from Mrs. Mesheau and Mr. Sadowsky (our PE teachers)
On January 11th all grades will be starting our gymnastics unit. This will run for 3 weeks with the final week being mission impossible. As there is a higher risk for injury, this is a zero tolerance unit. Any students performing any activities in an unsafe manner or causing distraction to others will be removed from gymnastics and given an assignment to complete at a desk in the gym instead. In extreme cases where the safety of others is at risk, students will be removed from the gym.
We do perform some activities which involve heights and tell the students to only climb as high as they feel comfortable with. There is no penalty for not making it to the top.
For this unit we ask that students are wearing appropriate clothing to allow for movement and safety.
No dangling ear rings, necklaces, bracelets, watches or rings.
Long hair is tied back
no loose open clothing such as unbuttoned shirts or open hoodies.
Don't wear pants that are too tight
Don't wear dresses, or skirts
No boots, heels, sandals or dress shoes.

Kids were much better dressed today. We think they learned that if they go outside without their mitts on they are VERY cold!!!! We are glad they are learning to keep themselves safe. If your child has lost their mitts/gloves please check our Lost & Found inside the front doors of the school.
This morning we worked on sight word activities and this afternoon we learned a few more Daily 5 activities. We then practiced using the activities.

Kids got to go outside today!!!! It was wonderful! But some students did not have proper winter gear. Please send your child with a toque, mitts/gloves and a scarf. It is still very cold and students need to be dressed properly for the weather. If you would like to send an extra pair to stay at school, that would be fine as well.
We worked on some sight words today. Here are a couple links that students can listen to at home.

Happy New Year
Today was a great day! It was a great start to our 2017 time in Grade 1.
We had a wonderful time in PE playing lots of different tag games.
Once in class we sang O Canada and had our morning calendar time. Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. G are starting a morning message where we will have to find the mistakes and make corrections. This will help us practice our spelling and writing.
We reviewed Classroom Rules and Expectations and came up with a Class Pledge! Your Child put their thumbprint on our class pledge that hangs on each door into the class. They will also receive one for them to take home and share with you. It reads as follows:

Today I will do my best
to be MY best.
What I do today will make a difference
in my life.
My choices will affect me and those around me.
I will listen.
I will follow directions.
I will be honest.
I will respect the rights
of others.
I will learn something
today,
because today matters and
my future is built
one "NOW" at a time.
This afternoon we listened to a story about how dinosaurs keep their friends. They share, are kind and show their friends they care. We will be more like dinosaurs in our classes. We then had 2 circles and talked about what we did over Winter Break. Lots of kids went sledding and played in the snow. We are so glad you were able to get outside and have some fun.
